Guide to the Best Equipment for Your Home Gym

By: Jeremy Fox, CNC, CPTUpdated: July 9, 2023

When it comes to building a home gym, purchasing equipment can become costly, particularly if you plan on buying an entire set of dumbbells.

However, there is a cost-effective solution available in the form of an adjustable dumbbell bar that allows you to add weight plates. With numerous brands, sizes, and weights to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is the best fit for you.

That’s why I have written an article that explains the features and benefits of different dumbbell bar sets. By reading this, you can make an informed decision and save money while setting up your dream home gym.

What Is A Dumbbell Bar?

If you’re not familiar, a dumbbell bar is a compact version of a barbell. And you can create dumbbells of varying sizes by attaching weight plates to each end of the handle.

The upside is that you don’t have to spend money on a whole set of dumbbells. With just a few weight plates, the dumbbell bar replaces hundreds of pounds of traditional dumbbells, saving both money and space.

When it comes to heavier weights, using dumbbell bars can be a bit awkward. It’s important to handle them carefully and avoid throwing or dropping them as you would with solid dumbbells.

Types Of Dumbbell Bars

There are multiple types of dumbbell bars to fit different uses, weight plates, and budgets. Two of the most common types are the 1-inch dumbbell bar and the 2-inch dumbbell bar.

Additionally, these bars come in two varieties, namely, threaded or smooth ends.

Threaded 1-Inch Dumbbell Bar

This particular dumbbell bar has a 1-inch diameter end, making it compatible only with weight plates that have a 1-inch diameter hole in their center.

Typically, the length of 1-inch dumbbell bars is around 14 inches, which makes them space-efficient. Furthermore, they are less costly and lighter compared to other types of dumbbell bars.

The version of the 1-inch dumbbell bar pictured below has threaded ends. Once you load the plates, all you need to do is twist on the lock collar to secure the weights.

Smooth 1-Inch Dumbbell Bar

Other 1-inch dumbbell bars have smooth ends where the weights are held in place with 1-inch spring clip collars. The clips are faster for changing weight, but they can slide off on exercises when the dumbbell is tilted up.

2-Inch Dumbbell Bar

Another type of dumbbell bar has 2-inch diameter sleeves on its ends. These bars are like miniature barbells and are compatible with standard-size weight plates and clips.

The grip is still a 1-inch diameter knurled handle but slightly longer, with an overall length of around 20 inches. Although they take up slightly more space, you can add more weight to 2-inch dumbbell bars.

How Much Does A Dumbbell Bar Weigh?

Without weight plates, dumbbell bars weigh 3-10 pounds each, depending on the size, brand, and collars. Below is a table of several different examples to give you an idea.

Dumbbell Bar Weight By Size & Brand

Brand Diameter Length Weight
A2ZCARE 1″ 14″ 3.8 lbs (1.73 kg)
Day 1 Fitness 1″ 14″ 4 lbs (1.82 kg)
Sunny Health 1″ 14″ 4 lbs (1.82 kg)
Annzoe 2″ 20″ 7.83 lbs (3.56 kg)
UBOWAY 2″ 20″ 7.83 lbs (3.56 kg)
CAP Barbell 2″ 20″ 10 lbs (4.55 kg)

The weights in this table are based on the manufacturers’ specifications and include the weight of the collars. Actual weight may vary.

To put that in perspective, here are the weights of some other common types of gym bars.

Comparison Of Dumbbell Bars

When deciding which dumbbell bars to purchase, it’s crucial to consider your desired usage, existing gym equipment, and budget. This includes the exercises you plan on doing, the brands and types of bars available, and the cost of different options.

To help you make an informed decision, I’ll compare the functions, compatibility, and costs of adjustable dumbbell bars.

Functionality

When it comes to functionality, there are slight differences to note. For instance, the 1-inch threaded bar may be more suitable for exercises where the bar is perpendicular to the floor, such as hammer curls.

On the other hand, the 2-inch dumbbell bar is ideal if you intend to lift heavier weights. Each Olympic dumbbell bar can hold up to 150 lbs, while the 1-inch bar is limited to a maximum of 100 lbs.

Compatibility

Another factor to consider is compatibility with your existing equipment. For instance, if you own a set of Olympic plates, opting for the 2-inch dumbbell bar is more logical. Likewise, if you have 1-inch compatible weight plates, the 1-inch bar would be the better choice.

Cost

When choosing equipment for a home gym, cost is often the most important consideration.

Those with limited budgets may opt for the 1-inch dumbbell bars, which typically cost around $30 for a pair. On the other hand, 2-inch bars can cost up to $70 per pair.

While the 2-inch bars don’t come with weight plates, investing in these bars may be more cost-effective in the long run if you already have Olympic plates.

Before you make your purchase, it’s important to realize that you get what you pay for with home gym equipment. Skimping for the bargain brand will get you flimsy dumbbells that don’t last long. With that said, you don’t have to spend a fortune either.

Best Budget Dumbbell Bar

If you opt for an inexpensive 1-inch dumbbell bar, I would go with A2ZCARE threaded dumbbell handles.

This particular brand offers a variety of sizes and options to fit what you’re looking for. And they have the best average rating on Amazon.

On the other hand, if you’re planning to lift more than 50 lbs with your dumbbell bars, I recommend going with a 2-inch dumbbell bar.

A solid option would be the Annzoe Olympic dumbbell handles. These bars are high quality and come with screw-on collars that hold heavier weights in place.
