How Much Does A Deadlift Bar Weigh?
By: Jeremy Fox, CNC, CPT – Published: December 17, 2023
Most deadlift bars weigh 45 lbs (20 kg), but the weight of bars can vary depending on the type of bar you are using. For example, the weight could be different if you use a non-standard or specialty barbell.

In this article, I will guide you through the weight of each type of deadlift bar in this article so that you can have a better idea of how much weight you are lifting.
Why Deadlift Bar Weight Matters
If you’re wondering whether the weight of your deadlift bar makes a difference, the truth is that a one-pound difference is not a big deal. However, with certain bars, you could be deadlifting 30 pounds more than you thought!
Therefore, it’s important to know the weight of your specific bar. Especially if you’re going for a one-rep max or using progressive overload to get stronger.
Types Of Bars Used for Deadlifts
The deadlift exercise can be performed using different types of barbells such as the power bar, Olympic bar, and hex or trap bar. There are also deadlift bars that have unique features designed specifically for this exercise.
It’s important to note that the weight of deadlift bars can vary based on the brand, design, and machining precision. Therefore, it’s recommended to check the weight of your bar to know for certain.
Common Deadlift Bar Weights
In the table below, you can see how much each type of deadlift bar weighs in pounds and kilograms. The trap or hex bar weight has a range because there is no standard like there is for other bars.
Tabel 1. How Much Does A Deadlift Bar Weigh?
Bar Type | Pounds | Kilograms |
---|---|---|
Standard | 45 | 20.45 |
Olympic (Men) | 44 | 20 |
Olympic (Women) | 33 | 15 |
Hex (Trap) | 19-77 | 8.6-35 |
Deadlift | 44 | 20 |
How Much Does a Standard Deadlift Bar Weigh (Power Bar)?
A standard bar, also known as a power bar, is commonly found in most gyms. It usually weighs 45 lbs or 20.5 kg without any additional plates. This versatile barbell is designed to be used for various exercises.
However, it may not be the best choice for the deadlift due to its relatively high stiffness and knurl pattern.
How Much Does an Olympic Deadlift Bar Weigh?
An Olympic bar is primarily used for platform lifts, including cleans, jerks, and snatches. For men, the Olympic bar weighs 20kg or 44lbs, while for women, it weighs 15kg or 33lbs.
The unique feature of this bar is its “whip,” that is, how much the bar bends during transition movements, which is beneficial for Olympic lifts and deadlifts.
How Much Does a Hex (Trap) Deadlift Bar Weigh?
The hex bar or trap bar is a specialty barbell with a 6-sided shape that wraps around your body during exercises like the deadlift. Depending on the type of hex bar, it can weigh anywhere from 19-77 lbs (8.6-35kg).

How Much Does a Powerlifting Deadlift Bar Weigh?
Powerlifting deadlift bars are straight barbells used for the sole purpose of pulling heavy weight from the floor. These specialty bars weigh 44 lbs (20 kg).
Two of the most popular are the Ohio deadlift bar and the Texas deadlift bar. While these deadlift bars weigh the same, they differ in some of their other properties and dimensions.
How To Check Your Deadlift Bar Weight
It’s possible to determine the weight of a deadlift bar through a few different methods. Firstly, check if the weight is printed on the end of the shaft. If not, you can weigh the bar by balancing the center on a scale, or by holding the bar while standing on a scale and subtracting your own weight.
However, it’s important to note that these methods are only accurate if the scale is calibrated properly. To verify calibration, weigh something with a known weight or check for a calibration sticker on the scale.
Deadlift Bar Weight Calculator
It can be difficult to determine the weight of a deadlift bar and plates combined. That’s why I created a straightforward calculator to help you figure it out.
All you have to do is enter the weight of your unloaded deadlift bar, select the number of plates on each side, and choose the size of the plates you’re using. The calculator will do the math for you and provide you with the total weight of your deadlift.
Deadlift Bar vs Stiff Bar: Which Is Better?
You have just learned about the weight of a deadlift bar and why it is important. However, the weight difference between deadlift bars and standard power bars is not significant.
The stiffness of the bar is actually the most important factor in how it performs. You may want to read my article on deadlift bars versus stiff bars to learn more about how bar flexibility can help you lift more weight during deadlifts.
